Your bank card looks after your money. This one will look after your objects’ story.

0:00 — [Music: analog synths. In the evening, in a flat drawn in gold line art, a woman hangs a framed art print on the wall: a tree on a hill, under the moon. On a sideboard, her phone screen lights up with a blurry photo taken in a gallery: the artist signing the print.] “A print, signed tonight, in front of you. What will be left of that moment?”

0:06 — [In an attic, among an adult’s belongings (a jacket, glasses, archive boxes), a teenager sits on the floor, an open card binder on his knees, holding a graded card in each hand and looking from one to the other.] “Thirty years of cards, in binders. If one day you were gone, it’d all go to a yard sale.”

0:12 — [At a retro video game fair, two strangers face to face, both hesitant. One holds the real B.A.T. box close, in colour, still shrink-wrapped; the other reaches out, then holds back.] “B.A.T., still shrink-wrapped: your retro-gaming grail. Facing a stranger, who trusts first?”

0:18 — [On black, the real B.A.T. box, alone.] “An object changes hands. Its story gets lost.”

0:23 — [On black, a gold title appears then fades: “The Seal”.] “The Seal.”

0:26 — [The B.A.T. box on a table. The black Seal drops and settles on the corner of the box, with a gold glint. A hand brings a phone above the Seal; a cyan ring pulses around it: the phone reads it.] “A Seal. The phone reads it. The card confirms. Now it’s a relic. You’re its keeper.”

0:31 — [On black, a phone drawn in gold line art, and the real B.A.T. box floating, in colour. A hand lays the RELICKEEPER card on the top of the phone; its LED lights up and the screen glows. The B.A.T. box is drawn into the card, spinning, then dozens of other relics drawn in gold line art after it. The phone screen lights up on “My Vault” and fills, one by one, with photos of the relics. On-screen text: “Yours to keep — in one gesture.” Fade to black.] “Yours to keep, in one gesture.”

0:40 — [On black, a gold title appears then fades: “The Transfer”.] “The Transfer.”

0:43 — [A hand holds the card against the back of a phone; the card lights up. The “My Vault” app screen appears and scrolls. Then, in close-up, the “How would you like to pass on this relic?” screen, set to Sale, Sovereign and Anchor. In the background, in half-light, two people face to face at the same table, drawn in gold line art: the holder holds the real B.A.T. box, the buyer listens. The Anchor button pulses; the Sovereign button sparkles and draws in three gold icons: two hands passing a relic, a masked bust, a crown. The screen switches to Public and Maximum; the Maximum button pulses, and the Public button, sparkling green, draws in four green icons: an ID card with a check mark, a signing pen, a PDF document, a clock. Labelled “RELICKEEPER mobile app”. Back to the hand touching the phone with its card: its LEDs light up.] “The keeper opens the vault, and chooses how to pass it on. Between friends, hand to hand. For your grail, a signed transfer. Then signs with a single touch, without leaving the table.”

0:57 — [One hand passes the phone to another; on the table, the card and the B.A.T. box drawn in gold line art, its Seal at the corner.] “They hand over the same phone.”

1:02 — [The second hand taps its own card on the same phone; a gold button lights up. Then, large, the app screen filmed: “Transmission Sealed — The relic has a new holder”, with the app’s gold and cyan fireworks; gold confetti bursts around the phone. Labelled “RELICKEEPER mobile app”.] “The new holder taps their card, and confirms.”

1:09 — [One hand passes the B.A.T. box, drawn in gold line art with its Seal, to another hand, above two cards. At the same moment, the real box, small, leaves the first card and lands on the second, which glows gold. App screen: the Registry, “A timestamped record of all your transmissions”, with the B.A.T. box line and its date. Labelled “RELICKEEPER mobile app”. On-screen text: “A story handed down.”] “A story handed down. One never leaves without the other. Keeper to keeper.”

1:16 — [Split screen. Left: two hands pass the real sealed B.A.T. box, its Seal at the corner. Right: two hands each touch the same phone with their card; their LEDs light up at the contact.] “Everyone leaves with what they came for.”

1:21 — [In gold line art, an adult hand places the real RELICKEEPER card in a child’s small hand; the card lights up in the palm.] “And one day, for your children.”

1:24 — [The frame widens: dozens of card pairs exchange relics, faster and faster. Each relic named passes large: a signed art print, a graded card, the real B.A.T. box still shrink-wrapped, a figurine, a speedrun record. The relics turn into gold line drawings, then spiral into a vortex of light that tightens into a white flash. The music rises and stops dead at the flash.] “On platforms, your relic loses its story. Here, it keeps it. A signed print. A graded card. A shrink-wrapped box. A figurine. A speedrun record.”

1:39 — [In the white of the flash, the RELICKEEPER logo appears in black, backlit; rays of light converge on it, it draws in the light and turns white on black; then “Memory becomes matter.”, in silence. The bottom of the frame stays clear: at the end, the page shows the “Reserve my place · €5” button there.] “Memory becomes matter.”

1:43 — [The end card stays on screen.] “RELICKEEPER. Reserve your place: five euros, returned after the campaign.”

The inventor

Olivier Cordoleani

An engineer by training and an art director, Olivier Cordoleani has been building digital worlds for thirty-five years. In 1989 he co-wrote B.A.T. with Hervé Lange, a game published by Ubi Soft, winner of the 1990 Tilt d’Or for best graphics and the 1989 Gen d’Or for best interactive adventure game. His observation today: we rent our pictures, our music, our worlds; we no longer own them. RELICKEEPER is his answer, a card you hold in your hand to record an object’s provenance and organise its passing on, from hand to hand.
